During a power outage, also known as a blackout,
human behaviour reveals a unique combination of vulnerability, intimacy, and reconnection. When the lights go out, so too does the technological noise that keeps people apart even when they share the same room. Without television, phones, or computers, couples are suddenly reminded of one another’s presence. The blackout becomes an unexpected pause in the relentless tempo of daily life, forcing people to slow down and engage in conversation—or in silence, or to simply be together.

The use of candlelight during a blackout adds a potent emotional and aesthetic layer to this reconnection.  Psychologically, dim lighting reduces self-consciousness and enhances feelings of closeness. The flickering light creates a setting that feels private and timeless—a romantic cocoon insulated from the chaos of the modern world.

When technology disappears and people find themselves bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, they return to a slower, more human rhythm—one that prioritizes connection, warmth, and intimacy. In that sense, the myth of the blackout-induced surge in pregnancies reflects a deeper truth: sometimes, in the quiet darkness, we rediscover the simple, luminous bonds that light up human life  ... and create it.
