After WW 2. the U.S. government program called Operation Paperclip recruited over 1,600 German and Austrian scientists, engineers, and technicians, nearly half had Nazi Party or SS affiliations.

Wernher von Braun, a former Nazi Party and SS member who used slave labor to build rockets, was transferred directly to NASA's newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. He is celebrated as the chief architect of the Saturn V rocket that sent US astronauts to the moon.
